Ayla is very honest and straight-foward, due in part to her being raised in the Clan. She is shown to be quite intelligent, using both logic and 'outside-the-box' thinking to solve problems. Ayla tends to be quite modest about her more exceptional skills and talents, often expressing embarrassment when people praise her. #AYLA CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR FREE#It takes Ayla a long time to finally break free of her Clan training and value herself. She also struggles to express her inner thoughts and feelings to people, a flaw which persists right to the end of the series. Ayla has difficulties with her self-esteem, viewing herself as being physically ugly and also believing she not a "good Clan woman". Ayla has a habit of challenging authority figures and rules, though she is generally polite and respecful towards people. She has a strong will to survive and also longs for love and acceptance. She is said to be from the Crimean area.Īyla is shown throughout the novel to be a courageous, strong-willed woman. #AYLA CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR SERIES#Almost every male character of her species in the series finds Ayla exceptionally beautiful, but Ayla initially describes herself as "big and ugly." Another word frequently used to describe her is "exotic," indicating that she seems a bit foreign to everyone who meets her, and that her own people live somewhere else. Her speech is also a remnant of their way of speaking, but not as obvious as strength. Her exceptional strength comes from trying to keep up with the massive Neanderthals. Some of Ayla's traits come from living with the Clan. Auel said that the drawing was a pretty good likeness of Ayla. With high cheekbones, a well-defined jaw, and aīased on these descriptions, artist Judy made a drawing for the Meet Ayla project. Lashes a shade or two darker than her hair herĮyebrows were somewhat lighter, between the two Leather binding curled around her tanned face." "Her large eyes were grey-blue outlined with Natural wave and loose strands that had escaped the Highlights where the sun had lightened it, was heldīack out of her way with a thong. "Her long, thick, dark blond hair, gleaming with Full-grown, she is depicted as being a beautiful woman with long, wavy dark blonde hair - sometimes compared to the colour of ripe hay or the dun yellow of her horse, Whinney's coat - and blue-grey eyes.Īyla's face and hair are described in detail in the fourth book: She is agile and fairly muscular for a female, with a tanned skin. Ayla’s sexual fulfillment struck a weird, deep chord: the idea that abuse and loneliness could be overwritten by gentleness and pleasure.Ayla is a nearly 6-foot-tall female of the Others. In that way, Ayla’s “First Rites” are a total wish fulfillment for readers: By this point we adored and identified with Ayla so strongly, suffering with her through Cave Bear, and we really wanted this for her-and for us. Beyond being merely titillating, these scenes are there to demonstrate Jondalar’s bona fides between the furs, and to convince us that he’s gentle and generous enough to give Ayla what she deserves. Jondalar does have sexual encounters with other women in The Valley of the Horses before he meets Ayla. It also introduces Jondalar, a handsome, sensitive, well-endowed Cro-Magnon on his own epic journey, who eventually needs rescuing by Ayla after a run-in with her pet cave lion. The novel details three years Ayla spends alone, inventing horseback riding and taming a cave lion. #AYLA CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR FULL#The Ice Age becomes oddly (and, likely, ahistorically) utopian, full of Great Earth Mother-worshipping Cro-Magnons with egalitarian societies. With the publication of The Valley of the Horses in 1982, Auel made a sharp turn toward romance. Ultimately, though, Ayla’s ability to learn and do both women’s and men’s work is key to her own survival and safety indeed, Auel makes it clear that it’s key to the evolution of humankind. #AYLA CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR HOW TO#Ayla has no such limitations, and she learns how to hunt and make tools, transgressions against the gendered order of the clan that result in repeated punishment and shunning. Since clan members are unable to learn and remember new information, gender roles and norms are unchangeable. Clan men and women are born with different sets of knowledge. Not only is the clan brutally patriarchal, but the roles of men and women are utterly biologically determined. Published in 1980, right on the cusp of a backlash against the feminist gains of the previous two decades, The Clan of the Cave Bear is deeply concerned with gender roles in society. Literary dystopias are always steeped in the cultural anxieties of their time. Unlike Katniss Everdeen’s Panem or Tris Prior’s post-apocalyptic Chicago, the society Ayla lives in is not the dystopia our current world could evolve into.
